Overview of Garmin Montana 680t
If you’re looking for a powerful handheld GPS with most of the bells and whistles, the Garmin Montana 680 may be your next big buy. This device is a fast receiver with excellent reception. With many fancy features such as an 8 MP camera, several mounting options, and a 4 GB internal memory, this device is ready to go on your next big adventure. This receiver is the most powerful of all tested, giving it the best accuracy and reception. It also features a very large screen and easy-to-use interface, a characteristic of most Garmin units. The rechargeable NiMH battery pack (or use of 3 AA batteries) is perfect for the traveler who uses their GPS unit often.
Even though we loved how powerful this unit was, it was not as versatile as other units. It was the largest and heaviest of all tested and proved to be a poor option for backpacking or lightweight adventures.
Garmin Montana 680t feature
Garmin Montana 680 comes with rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Can be used with 3 AA batteries to get another 6 hours of charge. Full-day battery life of 16 hours per charge. Only outpaced by the eTrex range which boasts 25 hours maximum on a charge. weighs 10.2 oz while the lithium ion battery is in (289g) and is slightly heavier at 11.7 OZ with three AA batteries mounted.
The 680t has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and a micro SD card slot under the battery pack. The onboard camera has been upgraded to 8mp and there’s an 8GB microSD card slot for maps. The waterproofing is rated IPX7 and there are over 200 maps available on Garmin’s website. The phone also has a built-in rechargeable battery life of up to 22 hours, and three AA batteries can be used as emergency power back-ups. It can be charged using a normal cigarette lighter and has a micro-USB port so you can charge your phone on the go and still use it as a phone.
In addition, the 680t includes a 3-axis tilt-functional electronic compass, which allows the system to continue to navigation properly even though the unit is angled in operation.
Screen & Receiver
Their sunshine visible 4″ TFT screen was a hallmark of the previous units and returned from earlier Montana versions. Adding GLONASS to the regular GPS receiver enables you to acquire your location quicker and more accurately. In places where you are under the mountains or under forest cover it will also be useful to ensure that you have the most accurate solution you can.
Garmin’s Montana 680t also comes with the Full Topo V5 maps for Australia and NZ. All of the maps can be run in tandem so you can seamlessly transition between them. GPSMAP 66st is an even more rugged device with a MIL-STD-810 rating against thermal, shock, and water damage. Instead of only using GPS and GLONASS, the GPSMAP also utilizes Galileo for even more accuracy in navigation. It also has a built-in flashlight with an SOS beacon.
Ease of Use
This unit’s screen is like the other portable in Garmin. The strength on the hand is a single push button while the rest is mostly tactile.
You would use the touch display as a keypad to access points of path and other details in the same manner as any other touch screen computer. We liked the large screen and easy to use menu, which were considered very basic for some of our beginner users. We found this to be the second simplest unit for the full novice in contrast with the others.
Simple to learn, Garmin Montana 680t has a long battery life, comfortably equipped monitor, ample of storage and MicroSD slot. Directional capability, impermeability, and fast GPS + GLONASS integration technology. The Montana680greatest t’s critique is its unit scale. The screen and its battery is very chunky and can be bulky, even though it’s not over-sized if the light is to be packed for a journey. It has a GPS map function for up to 24 hours to keep an eye on your road and path map. You may also use GPS charts to track speed, distance and speed.
